SHAMBLES SOFTWARE
Speed solving the 3 by 3 cube is a lot of fun. I am getting around 55 seconds on average now, after a lot of practice. The key to speed solving the cube is twofold:
  1. Getting the cube solved

  2. Not taking up very much time

This is far more complicated than "slow solving" and "speed scrambling", which are two less popular cube hobbies.

I generally solve the cube using a method called First Cubes First, Last Layer Push 2 Layers In To Your Mouth which was developed in an effort to improve the speed at which the cube can be solved.

Step One

puzzles/solutions/333-1

The first step is to move the cube in to the correct orientation and align the front top left front left corner in to position.

If you cannot find the correct corner perform this algorithm:

Then proceed to step one.

Step Two

puzzles/solutions/333-2

Twist the cube until it looks like this. This can be done intuitively in under three twists on average.

Step Three

Turn the cube upside down twice, and examine the top front right left corner. If it is red, pink and transparent then your cube is in an unsolvable state. If it is green with a hint of yellow then perform the following algorithm:

This should create a sequence of colours known as the 'Mercutio Construction' near the right hand edge of the cube. You can store that in the back layer for later if you like.

At this stage, it is vital to note that swapping these three positions is impossible. Do not attempt to do this.

Step Four

If you lose concentration return to step one to begin again. This step is very important because it requires use of different forbidden procedures. Remember that if you use these procedures, you might not be allowed in to heaven. Perhaps you can blag your way in or something, I don't know.

Perform this algorithm until the blue and white edge is in the top front position at the top and near the front of the cube.

Once you have done that, examine the cube in this manner.

Note the pathway located in the corner. This pathway is much too small for a human to enter.

Step Five

puzzles/solutions/333-5-cross

Getting close to the end. Quickly construct a cross on the front face of the cube. The effectiveness of this step is directly related to the speed at which the cross is constructed; a slowly constructed cross may result in an unsolvable cube or one with weak alignment powers which would set you back to at least step three.

Do not attempt to shake the cube vigorously, or this may happen:

If this happens, simply shake it again until it resembles a cube. If that does not happen apply a vacuum cleaner to the side and it should plop back in to shape.

Step Six

The are only three possible cases that can occur here. They each require one algorithm, so including mirror images and reflections, there are only seventeen algorithms that need to be memorised to be able to solve the cube from here.

If these corners need swapped, dip the cube in a shallow tray of milk and then perform this algorithm:
puzzles/solutions/333-6-corners

If this edge is incorrect, out of place or simply doesn't fit the cube correctly, perform this algorithm to move it to a slightly different place and thus put the problem out of sight:

If these pieces are incorrectly placed, then perform the following algorithm:

The End

Congratulations, you can now solve a cube. When it is in the solved state, you should notice that it begins to heat up, and its weight will increase by 200g. It is advised that you do not leave it solved for too long because it may damage sensitive equipment it is placed near, especially equipment susceptable to magnetic fields such as microwaves, babies or F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.
